MEET THE MAKER- Bec

Firstly, please share a little bit about who you are/ what you do/ where you live...

I’m Bec, one half of the jej & boc duo. I am a textile designer by trade and I create the fabrics at jej & boc. I currently work in project management but my dream is to be a full time creative at jej & boc, which I am actively pursuing every chance I get!

I am currently living in a lovely little beachside apartment in sunny Perth, Western Australia with my partner Will. I moved here about a year ago after a long time away living in Melbourne and London. I last lived in Perth in 2013 and coming back has certainly taken some adjustment but I am happy to be here and cherish living by the sea and close to family.

How and why did you become a designer?

Jess and I talked about creating a fashion label for many years. We always thought there was a gap in the market for clothes that evoked childhood memories- fun clothing for adults with bold and colourful prints. After finishing a business degree at the tender age of 21, I was no where near ready to step into an office environment so I set sail for a year of travel. It was in that year that I really tapped into my creativity and realised I wanted to do something with design. I lived with my artist granny for 6 months and painted with her whilst doing many art classes. After much research, I settled on textile design and so after my year abroad I moved to Melbourne to study a textile design degree at RMIT. Through those 3 years, the vision for jej & boc became clearer and clearer. I have had various jobs and experiences since that time, but the vision has always remained the same- to become a well regarded Australian-made lifestyle label.

What do you like to design, and what inspires you?

My biggest inspiration is colour! I love bold and vibrant colour in design, which shows through in all our prints. I am also very inspired by nature and all of the beautiful flora and fauna we have in Australia. One of my favourite things to paint is Australian native flowers.

How would you describe your personal style? (Both home and fashion)

I would describe my personal style both in the home and my fashion as an eclectic mix. I like to pair plain simple pieces with pops of colour and print. As I write this I am wearing a ditsy floral silk blouse with some wide leg black pants which I think encapsulates my style well.

What are the things that bring sparkle to your day? Please share any favourite things at the moment such as podcasts/TV/music/hobbies etc...

Things that sparkle my day…

-I love waking up early and starting my day with yoga or pilates. Although I don't always love the moment that my alarm goes off, I always love it during the practice and how I feel after :)

-Sharing a cup of coffee with Will in the morning

-Walking on the beach listening to podcasts, some of my current favourites are: Mama Mia Out Loud -to keep up to date with all that is happening in the world, Hamish & Andy for a good laugh, How I built this and Lady Startups for some business inspiration.

-Watching the sunset over the ocean with a kombucha or beer in hand

-Seeing my sister for lunch or jej & boc catch ups

-Cooking dinner mindfully with a good playlist, I love Putumayo music from all around the world, Rodriguez, Angus and Julia Stone or Ben Howard album.

-Doing anything creative, sometimes it’s really hard to fit into the day but always feels good when it happens :)

Please share a fun fact about yourself!

I am a huge Survivor fiend, I've watched all 42 seasons and even had a survivor party when I was 11 where I made all my friends eat rice and do hard challenges.
